The ZEBRA-A-Class by Daimler
SAD BUT TRUE : NOT ON THE ROAD ANYMORE !
Unfortunately, Daimler built only about 15 prototypes of this amazing Battery Electric Auto (BEA) in the 1990s, for the "California Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate", and the "ZEBRA-A-Class", also called "A-Class EV" (Electric Vehicle), never came into serial production, although it was a practical, emission-free, quiet and reliable car for daily use, as you can read in the official brochure published by Daimler in december 1997.
Even in the mountains of the Bernese Alps in Switzerland, the "ZEBRA-A-Class" was the perfect car, as the max. torque of the electric motor is available at 0 - 2600 rpm.

For more information about this real and only "Mercedes of all Electric Autos", please contact Daimler in Germany or the "Kraftwerke Oberhasli" (KWO), a hydroelectric powerplant in Innertkirchen/Switzerland, which conducted the mountain tests together with Daimler in the 1990s.
The sad story of the ZEBRA-A-Class is of course also the story of the ZEBRA battery, which comes from Pretoria/South Africa, as you can read in "Out of Africa", published by "Beta R & D" from Derby/England in october 2000.
Today, ZEBRA Batteries are produced by CEBI (MES-DEA) in Stabio/Switzerland, who bought ZEBRA from Daimler in 1999.
